Sold for $1000. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AR Drachm (15mm, 4.12 g, 9h). Sidon mint. Struck under Menes. Dated RY 9 of Abdalonymos (325/4 BC). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; Phoenician 9 (date) in left field, ΣI below throne. Price 3488; Newell, Sidon 27, pl. II, 11 (same dies); DCA 871. VF, toned, reverse a little off center. Extremely rare dated issue. Only two recorded.

Drachms of Alexander from Phoenician mints are very rare. This coin is from one of only two known issues of drachms from Sidon. Both Newell and Price only cite the BM and Prokesch-Osten (in Berlin) coins with this date. No hoards record any, and none of the collections published since Price contain any. As such, this may be the third known example.
