CARACALLA. 198-217 AD. AV Aureus (7.12 gm). Struck 198 AD. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / Caracalla standing left, holding Victory on a globe and spear, captive seated before in mourning. RIC IV 20; BMCRE 115 note; Cohen -. EF from the standpoint of wear, reverse a little softly struck, light tick marks on both sides. Gorgeous obverse style. Very rare variety, both BMC and RIC refer to only one specimen, from the Montagu collection, struck from the same obverse die. ($4000)
