STUART. temp. Charles I. 1625-1649. Set of 27 gaming tokens and an openwork carrying box. Possibly by Simon Passe or his workshop. Issued circa 1632. Group of 27 circular counters (each 27mm) depicting the Monarchs of England on obverse and royal coat-of-arms on reverse. Set includes the following runs of rulers: Edward the Confessor to William II Rufus (4) // Stephen to Henry III (5) // Edward II and III (2) // Henry IV to Edward V (5) // Mary I to Charles I (7), as well as relatives of James I: Mary, Queen of Scots (mother), Henry Stuart (first-born son), Frederick V, Elector Palatine (son-in-law), and Karl I Ludwig (nephew). Lot also includes a silver-plated openwork carrying box with lid showing a bust of Charles I left, base depicting a bust of Henrietta Marie left. MI 379/281. Counters average Fine. An almost complete set.
