MANUEL I, Comenus. 1143-1180 AD. AV Hyperpyron (4.13 gm). Thessalonica mint. Nimbate facing bust of Christ / Manuel standing facing, holding labarum and globus cruciger. DOC IV 1f; Hendy pl. 12,12; SB 1971. EF, scratch on reverse. Extremely rare. ($1500)

The Thessalonica hyperpyra of Manuel, the last gold coins struck at that provincial mint, can be distinguished from the issues of Constantinople by the use of a single barred cross on the globus held by the emperor.
