ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Northumbria. Æthelred II. Second reign, 843/4-849/50. Æ Styca (12mm, 1.37 g, 6h). Phase II, Group B. York mint; Eanred, moneyer. +AEILRED R, rosette / +EANRED R, rosette. Pirie 551-3 (same obv. die); North 188; SCBC 866. VF.
From the Peter Moffat Collection.
The reverse, at first glance, appears to be identifying Eanred as king. However, this aberration is more likely to be an engraver’s error, particularly when one compares it to Pirie 554, struck from the same obverse die, but with the reverse legend of simply EANRED.
