The Triumvirs. Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Autumn 34 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.51 g, 1h). Alexandria mint. Bare head of Mark Antony right; Armenian tiara to left / Diademed and draped bust of Cleopatra right; prow before; c/m: (MP) • (VE)S within incuse rectangle. Crawford 543/1; CRI 345; Sydenham 1210; RSC 1. For c/m: Howgego 839. Fine, lightly toned, two banker’s marks on Antony’s neck. Very rare issue with this late countermark.

According to Howgego, this countermark was applied to denarii at Ephesus between 1 January AD 74 and 23 June AD 79. Although known on both Republican and Imperial issues, it is rarely found on the former.
