George IV . 1823. AV 2 Pounds. Head left / St. George slaying the dragon. Seaby 3798; KM 690. EF, proof-like surfaces with only light bagmarks. ($500) This coin perhaps marks the apogee of modern British coin design. This exceptionally fine obverse engraving by Johann Baptiste Merlen is by most accounts far superior to Wyon's bust of 1826. Pistrucci is responsible for the classic St. George motiff on the reverse. These highly artistic design features, combined with the high-quality prooflike strike result in a highly medallic product, despite circulating coin status.
