John V Palaeologus, with John VI. 1341-1391. AR Basilikon (19mm, 0.98 g, 6h). Constantinople mint. Struck 1347-1353. John V or VI on horseback right; B to left, A to right / John V or VI on horseback right; E to left, Φ to right. DOC – (but cf. p. 185, 8); PCPC 292 (not represented in collection) = LPC p. 144, 7 = SB 2532 = A. Veglery & A. Millas, “Gold and silver coins of the time of John V,” NumCirc Vol. LXXIX/1 (January 1971), 17 = LHS 97 (10 May 2006), lot 326 (hammer of 8,500 CHF). VF, toned, areas of flat strike. Extremely rare, perhaps only the second known.

This exceedingly rare issue is highly interesting in that it names both emperors as “Palaeologos” rather than identifying John VI as “Cantacuzenus.”
