ARMENIA. Circa 8th century BC. Set of nine spindle whorls attributed to the Urartu period ; glass [1]; stone [2]; engraved bone [6]. One bone piece broken, otherwise in good condition. 9 whorls in lot. ($200)
From the Manuel Panossian Collection. Ex Movses Hergelian collection.
The 9th century BC was marked by the establishment of the Khalkidian state, called Errata by the Assyrians, in the region of lake Van, cf. "Ararat" of the Bible and "Alarodii" of Herodotus. The accompanying certificate, dated 7.4.1987, from Prof. A. Ebeyan of Beirut, Lebanon, states that these whorls are typical of the Karmer-Boulour region of Armenia in the period of the Urartu dynasty.
