THESSALY, Thessalian League. Mid-late 1st century BC. Æ Chalkous or Hemiobol (15mm, 4.96 g, 12h). Eubiotos and Philoxenos, magistrates. Helmeted head of Athena right; EYB[I–OTOY] above and below / Horse right, preparing to lie down; ΦIΛ[OΞENI] in exergue. Burrer p. 62; Rogers 57 corr. (spelling of magistrates’ names); BCD Thessaly II 909.2-4. VF, green patina, edge split, minor roughness. Scarce.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: An interesting detail of this coin’s reverse is the patterned cloth (or perhaps leather) cover clearly showing on the horse’s back...One wonders though how could this horse roll and scratch its back on the turf with this cover on it.
