THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. temp. Tiberius. AD 14-37. Æ Assarion (19mm, 4.25 g, 1h). Lykoutos, strategos. Helmeted head of Athena right / Athena Itonia standing left, holding crowning Nike and shield, with spear at side; monogram to left, [Λ]YKOYTO[Y] to right. Burrer pl. 21, 7; RPC I Supp. S-1431B.3 (this coin); BCD Thessaly II 921.3 (same dies). Good Fine, dark green patina, minor roughness. Extremely rare.

From the BCD Collection.

None of the three examples known to Burrer at the time of his study had a legible reverse, hindering accurate dating of the issue. All examples of this type appear to be struck from the same obverse die, but only this coin and BCD Thessaly II 921.3 have the magistrate’s signature well enough preserved to assign the issue to the time of Tiberius.
