GREEK. Northern Greece. Lot of ten (10) silver tetradrachms of Kavaros of Thrace in the name of Alexander III ‘the Great’. All coins: KINGS of THRACE: Kavaros. Circa 230/25-218 BC. AR Tetradrachm. In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Kabyle mint. Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; in inner left field, Artemis Phosphoros facing, holding two torches. Price 882. Near VF to VF, a number struck from a worn obverse die, as often encountered with issue. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Ten (10) coins in lot.

The chieftain Kavaros was the sole Gallic king of Thrace to issue coinage, striking at his capital of Kabyle (Artemis Phosphoros serves as the city’s badge). Obverse die links are shared between tetradrachms in Kavaros’ own name and in the name of Alexander, leaving no doubt that the latter were issued by the king..
