Sold for $140. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CALABRIA, Brundisium. Circa 215 BC. Æ Uncia (20mm, 9.88 g, 5h). Wreathed head of Neptune right; trident to left; • (mark of value) below / Phalanthos, holding cantharus and lyre, on dolphin left; • (mark of value) below. SNG France 1471–4; cf. HN Italy 738. VF, dark green patina, minor roughness.

From the Continental Collection.

HN Italy appears to have missed the entire first series of Æ for the circa 215 BC period, which is a multidenominational series that has no crowning Victory on the obverse behind Neptune’s head (cf. SNG France 1469–76). One should also note that the final series at the mint is also missing, which has the dolphin and rider facing right (cf. SNG France 1538–42).
