CALABRIA, Brundisium. 2nd century BC. Æ Quadrans (15mm, 3.50 g, 12h). Semuncial standard. Wreathed head of Neptune right; to left, Victory, crowning him with wreath, above trident; ••• (mark of value) below / Phalanthos, holding Victory who crowns him with wreath in right hand, lyre in left, on dolphin left; ••• (mark of value) below. SNG France 1531–2; HN Italy –; SNG Copenhagen 732 var. (star on rev.). VF, dark green patina, some earthen deposits. Very rare.

From the Continental Collection.

HN Italy 751 is called a quadrans, but the two pellets signify that it is actually a sextans (see SNG Copenhagen 745 for another from this same issue). The present coin, as well as SNG France 1531–2 and SNG Copenhagen 732, are the correct quadrans for this semuncial standard series.
