CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 380-325 BC. AR Diobol (12mm, 1.06 g, 3h). Head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with Skylla / Herakles standing right, holding club, fighting the Nemean Lion to right; tiny TA to upper right. Vlasto 1252 var. (same obv. die, different fight scene); HN Italy 914. VF, toned, light roughness, off center on obverse. Very rare issue missing in Vlasto.
From the Continental Collection.
Although missing from Vlasto, this particular fight scene is better known among the analogous diobols at Herakleia Lucania (cf. Van Keuren 39), which has their ethnic, HE, on the upper right, rather than the TA found on these at Tarentum.
