SICILY, Uncertain Roman mint. Circa 190 BC. Æ Tetras (20mm, 4.20 g, 9h). Laureate head of Zeus left / Winged thunderbolt; [three pellets (mark of value) above]. BAR –; CNS 182A (Panormus); HGC 2, –; Puglisi 426; Münzen und Medaillen GmbH 16 (Righetti), lot 71. Fine, green-brown patina, slightly off center, minor roughness. Extremely rare, one of approximately four known.
From the Continental Collection.
Until the publication of CNS, there were no illustrations of this rare issue, which had only been known from a specimen cataloged in Gabrici (no. 178). That piece, of similar quality the present coin, did not show the value mark on the reverse, which is only visible on the Righetti example.
