MARK ANTONY. 32-31 BC. AR Denarius (3.72 gm). ANT AVG III. VIR. R. P. C., Praetorian galley to the right / CHORTIS SPECVLATORVM, three legionary standards. Crawford 544/12; Sydenham 1214; RSC 6. Lightly toned VF. Scarce. ($200)

From the John M. McCarthy Collection

This type was issued at the same time as the legionary denarii, but this particular legend honors the Cohortes Speculatorum, i.e., the soldiers employed to carry dispatches and to accomplish executions. Normally ten such men were in each legion.
