From the John M. McCarthy Collection

Under Augustus' comprehensive reform of the monetary system a plentiful supply of aes coinage, in a range of denominations, was made available to the Roman populace for the first time in many years. Two metals were utilized — orichalcum (brass) for the more valuable denominations, copper for the lesser values. The supply of aes was augmented by the products of several important provincial establishments and this coin, a copper as (1/64th of the silver denarius) was issued from Lugdunum in the closing years of Augustus' reign. The reverse features the celebrated Altar of Lugdunum which had been dedicated by Augustus on August 1st, 10 BC.
