Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. PB “Denarius” (27mm, 8.56 g, 12h). IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTO–R–IA AVG, Victory standing left, holding wreath and palm frond. Good VF.
Highly unusual. We might assume this was possibly a forger’s trial strike, but there are areas of silvering remaining on the obverse. Clearly such a broad and overweight piece would not fool anyone, even if fully silvered. Perhaps it served as some type of presentation piece?
