THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION, Uncertain mint (Asoros = Assiros?). c. 500-480 BC. Triobol (?) (Silver, 11x15mm, 1.77 g). Sphinx seated to right, with plume emerging from her head.
Rev. Quadripartite incuse square.
Unpublished but for Lanz 150, 2010, 65 (
same dies, but ascribed to Samothrace and with the sphinx’s head partly off the flan). Extremely rare and particularly attractive. Very slightly rough surfaces,
otherwise, extremely fine.
From the Höher collection.
This extraordinary piece is apparently a triobol, or hemidrachm, and has to be connected with the rare tetradrachms (ranging from 12.5-14 g) that are now ascribed to an uncertain Macedonian mint (Svoronos assigned them to Asoros); as SNG ANS 1012 and Svoronos, HPM, pl. VII, 14 (= Traité I, 1004 and pl. XXVIII, 24, “incertaines d’Asie Mineure”).
