Pescennius Niger. AD 193-194. AR Denarius (18mm, 2.49 g, 12h). Antioch mint. IMP CAES C PESC NIGER IVST AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTO RI ΛE ΛVG, Victory advancing right, holding wreath in outstretched right hand and palm frond over shoulder in left. RIC IV 86 var. (obv. legend and bust type); cf. T.V. Buttrey, “The Denarii of Pescennius Niger,” NC 1992 President’s Address, p. xix, fig. 6; RSC 75aa var. (Victory left); BMCRE, 314 var. (same); cf. Rauch 94, lot 1033 (for obv.; same die). Good VF, edges a little crystallized. Rare bust type.
