John III Ducas (Vatatzes). Emperor of Nicaea, 1222-1254. AV Hyperpyron (28mm, 4.48 g, 6h). Magnesia mint. Struck 1232-1254(?). Christ Pantokrator enthroned facing; IC–XC across upper field, cross to left above throne / [Iω/ ΔЄ/CΠ/OT/H?] to left, (Tω)/ Π[O]/PΦ/V to right, John standing facing, holding labarum in right hand and akakia in left, being crowned and blessed by the Virgin Mary; ΜP–ΘV flanking head of Virgin. DOC 4c.1-2 (same obv. die); SB 2073. EF, tiny hole in flan to left of Christ’s head, faint graffiti in obverse margin.
