WORLD COUNTERMARKS. Lot of ten (10) AR Countermarked Denominations. All coins: countermarked on other denominations for use elsewhere in Europe, Africa, America, and Asia. Lot includes the following:

FOR USE IN EUROPE
(a) LOW COUNTRIES, Zuidelijke Nederlanden (Southern Netherlands). Filips IV van Spanje. 1621-1665. AR “48 Stuiver” (28mm, 13.16 g, 8h). Pair of vuurijzers and vuursteens; all within round incuse on obverse of a Potosí mint 4 Reales (cf. ME 6146). Flan split. Ex Ponterio 25 (25 September 1986), lot 461.

(b) RUSSIA, Tsardom of Rus. Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov. 1645-1676. AR Jefimok (42mm, 28.82 g, 1h). Dated 1655. Georgii Pobedenosets on horseback right; all within round incuse, and 1655 within rectangular incuse, both on obverse of a 1655 Nijmegen mint Nederlandse rijksdaalder (Davenport 4828). Ex Downie-Lepczyk 64 (2 December 1985), lot 590; Virgil Brand Collection (Part IV, Sotheby, 3 November 1983), lot 16.

FOR USE IN AFRICA
(c) MOZAMBIQUE, Colonial. Maria I. Queen of Portugal, 1786-1816. Counterfeit AR “960 Reis” (21mm, 26.76 g, 12h). Incuse MR monogram on reverse of 1764-MF Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint AR 8 Reales of Carlos III of Spain (ME 11928). Countermark is a modern copy and host coin has been chased and has had mount removed. Ex Superior 64 (30 January 1984), lot 2376.

(d) NICARAGUA, Colonial. León. AR 8 Reales (39mm, 26.82 g, 12h). Crowned lion rampant left within oval incuse on obverse of 1746-MF Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint AR 8 Reales of Felipe V of Spain (ME 9464). Ex Alexander Patterson Collection (Bonham’s, 19 July 1996), lot 576.

(e) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Java. AR Taler Batu (40mm, 27.42 g, 12h). Djawa in Malay-Arabic within circular incuse on obverse of 1758 Wien (Vienna) mint Taler of Maria Theresia (Davenport 1113). Ex Wyatt (7 April 1988), lot 365.

(f) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Madura. AR Real Batu (38mm, 26.77 g, 12h). “Madura Star” in lanceate incuse on reverse of 1767-MF Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint AR 8 Reales of Carlos III of Spain (ME 11950).

(g) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Sumatra. AR Quarter Real Batu (20mm, 6.37 g, 9h). Flower with incuse petals and raised carpels on obverse of 1763 Potosí mint AR 2 Reales of Carlos III of Spain (cf. ME 11475).

(h) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Sumatra. AR Dukaton Batu (42mm, 32.41 g, 12h). Flower with incuse petals and raised carpels on obverse of 1758 Hoorn mint AR Zilveren rijder of dukaton (P&W Wf32).

(i) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Sumenep. AR Real Batu (35mm, 23.29 g, 11h). Flower with incuse petals and carpels and sumenep in Malay-Arabic in rectangular incuse on reverse of Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint AR 8 Reales of Felipe V of Spain (cf. ME 9183).

(j) MALAY ARCHIPELAGO, Uncertain. AR Real Batu (28mm, 27.32 g, 5h). Crossed bars; two pellets, each in opposite quarters; all within circular incuse, and partial countermark, both on reverse of 1730-R Ciudad de México (Mexico City) mint AR 8 Reales of Felipe V of Spain. ME 9329. Coins average VF or better, toned. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Ten (10) coins in lot.
