NORMAN. Henry I. 1100-1135. AR Penny (20mm, 1.38 g, 10h). Pellets in Quatrefoil type (BMC xiv). Wincaestre (Winchester) mint; uncertain moneyer. Struck circa 1123-1125. [+hENRICVS...], crowned and draped facing bust, holding lis-tipped scepter in right hand; star to right / [+...V]S [:] ON : PIN[C :], pelleted cross, with star at center; all within quatrefoil, with trefoil at each end and inward-facing fleur in each quarter. Allen, Henry 938 (dies B/b) = Harvey 2254 (dies A/a); SCBI –; BMC –; North 870; SCBC 1175; CNG inventory 966188 (same dies). Good VF, irregular flan.


The moneyer’s name is obscured on all known specimens from this pair of dies. Unfortunately, the present coin adds no new letters to the reading.
