Sold for $130. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

SYRIA, Coele-Syria. Damascus. Valerian I. AD 253-260. Æ (31mm, 25.48 g, 12h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two eagles flanking vexillum inscribed LЄ[G/ III G?] in two lines; in exergue, ram’s head left. Cf. De Saulcy 1; Rosenberger –; BMC –. VF, green and brown patina, minor roughness, heavy encrustation on reverse. Rare.

From the J.S. Wagner Collection.

De Saulcy, after Mionnet, gives the inscription on the vexillum as LEG III GAL, but this would be a great deal to fit into the banner found on the current coin.
