M. Furius L.f. Philus. 119 BC. AR Denarius (3.95 gm). M.FOVRI.L.F, laureate head of Janus / Roma standing left holding spear and crowning trophy of Gallic arms and a carnyx; star above, ROMA right, PHLI in exergue. Crawford 281/1; Sydenham 529; Furia 18. Toned EF. ($300)
The reverse alludes to the defeat of the Allobroges by Q. Fabius Maximus in 120 BC. Their subjugation lead to the annexion of Gallia Narbonensis as a new Roman province. This denarius is one of the few in the Republican series to refer to a contemporary event.
