344, Lot: 314. Estimate $200.
Sold for $650. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

MYSIA, Pergamum. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ Medallion (44mm, 34.76 g, 6h). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Caracalla riding horse right, holding spear and being crowned by Nike to left; to right, bound captive seated left before another captive standing facing with trophy. Cf. Waddell Auction 1, lot 186 (Mytilene). Fine, rough tan-brown surfaces. Very rare.

From the Dr. George Spradling Collection.

Though extremely similar to the Waddell example, Mytilene never had a neokoron, while Pergamum did. As the latter mint struck similar medallions of this general size and appearance, an attribution to there seems to be the most likely.
