ARKADIA, Arkadian League. Circa 330-275 BC. AR Triobol – Hemidrachm (14mm, 2.81 g, 1h). Megalopolis mint. Laureate head of Zeus left / Pan seated left on rock, holding lagobolon and raising hand; APK monogram to left, Δ to right, syrinx below. Dengate Period I, Issue 7, 25 (same obv. die); BCD Peloponnesos (Megalopolis) 1530; HGC 5, 929. Good VF, darkly toned. Rare.

From the LJH Collection. Ex CNG Inventory 831403 (January 2009); BCD Collection (not in previous BCD sales), purchased from A. H. Baldwin, December 1990.

According to the BCD ticket, this coin was discovered by a metal dectorist in Essex, England. While it is surprising to find such a coin there, one wonders whether it was an ancient deposit, or the result of an unfortunate loss by a local who had recently been to Greece?
