KINGS of MACEDON. Demetrios I Poliorketes. 306-283 BC. Æ Half Unit (11mm, 1.78 g, 5h). Salamis mint(?). Helmeted head right / Prow right; BA above, [monogram below]. Cf. Newell 20 (Unit); Zapiti & Michaelidou 12. Good VF, dark green patina, some deposits and cleaning marks. Rare.

From the Collection of a Southern Pathologist, purchased from Antioch Associates, 1995.

Although the monogram is mostly off the flan, enough is visible to limit the possible mints Salamis and an uncertain mint in Asia Minor. Between these two mints, a differentiating feature is the presence of the bull’s horn on the helmet, which is only found on bronzes at Salamis and Tarsos. Since bronze of the latter feature two monograms, that leaves Salamis as the likely mint.
