SYRIA, Seleucis and Pieria. Nicopolis Seleucidis. Philip I. AD 244-249. Æ (28mm, 24.73 g, 6h). Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Distyle shrine, with twisted columns and vaulted roof, and containing statue of Nemesis? left; behind to left, cornucopia? over wheel; altar behind to right; Θ in exergue. R. Bland, “The coinage of Jotapian. Appendix: The coinage of Philip I from Nicopolis in Seleucia,” Essays Carson-Jenkins p. 205, 1-3 (same obv. die); Mabbott 2583 = Lingren II A2110A (same obv. die); Butcher 16 (citing the previous coin). VF, black patina, light deposits, minor roughness. Struck on an usually thick (~4mm) and heavy flan. The heaviest specimen recorded in Bland’s study is the Mabbott/Lindgren coin, weighing 20.20 g — over 20% less than this example.
