CONSTANTIVS II, Caesar. 324-337 AD. Æ Medallion of 1 1/2 Solidus Module (5.88 gm). Constantinople mint. Struck circa 333-337 AD. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS IVN NOB C, laureate draped and cuirassed bust right // TRIVMFVS CAESARVM, Victory facing, holding wreath and globe, in frontal quadriga with two horses at each side; CON in exergue. Good VF, brown patina, scattered pitting. Apparently Unpublished. ($2000)

The obverse bust ties this previously unknown medallion with a series of gold 1 1/2 solidi struck for Constantine I and his sons in the later years of his reign. (Cf.Dressel, Die Romische Medaillione 237 for a nearly identical obverse of Constantius II). The reverse type, with Victory in quadriga proclaiming the "Triumph of the Caesars" is completely unknown in any format. Contemporary large module gold pieces and medals bear the legends VIRTVS CAESARVM or TRIVMFATOR GENTIVM BARBARVM, relating to victories against the tribes menacing the Dacian border a campaign nominally commanded by Constantine II, but with Constans and Constantius II also present.
