THEODOSIUS I. 379-395 AD. AV Tremissis (1.36 gm). Constantinople mint. Struck 388-393 AD. D N THEODO-SIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing right, holding wreath and cross on globe; CONOB. RIC IX 75b; Depeyrot 50/2; Cohen 46. EF. ($1000)

From the William H. Williams Collection.

This coin is from the first issue of tremisses, which Theodosius I introduced to replace the 1 1/2 scripula. The tremissis, valued at 8 siliquae, became more common in usage than the 1 1/2 scripulum, valued at 9 siliquae, which seemed to be a coinage reserved for special or ceremonial occasions.
