LEO II and ZENO. 474 AD. AV Tremissis (1.47 gm). Constantinople mint? D N LEO ET ZENO P P AVG, pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing front, head left, holding wreath and cross on globe; six-pointed star in right field; CONOB. RIC X 807; Depeyrot 99/2; MIRB 5; DOCLR -. Good VF. Very rare. ($750)

From the William H. Williams Collection.

Though attributed via legend and type, the style of bust and letters is not consistent with Constantinople or other eastern mints. Additionally, the large, six-pointed star is consistent with western mint norms. Nonetheless, there are no Leo II and Zeno gold attributed to a western mint. Perhaps this specimen may be the first?
