OSTROGOTHS. Time of Witigis(?). 536-540 AD. AV Solidus (4.49 gm). Rome mint? DN IVSTINIL NV S PP L VC, helmeted and cuirassed facing bust, holding spear and shield / VICTORI L L VCCC, Victory standing left, holding long jeweled cross; six-point star in right field, L /COMOP. Apparently Unpublished, but cf. MEC 112 for earlier type in the name of Anastasius I, and MEC 122 in the name of Justinian I. Good VF, light graffiti in obverse field ($1000)

Ex Vecchi Auction 15 (15 June, 1999), lot 1675 (incorrect description). Stylistically, this solidus is too close to the Byzantine prototype to be a Visigothic issue. In certain details it fits the category of the Ostrogothic series in the name of Anastasius, but of a later, more debased style. The solidus in the name of Justinian, attributed to Athalaric (MEC 122) has a six-pointed star in the left field. This may represent a later, last issue of "Justinian" solidi before increasing hostilities with Constantinople prompted the Ostrogoths to remove his name from their coinages
