Quatrefoil type, circa 1017-1023. +CNVT REX ANGLOR, crowned bust left in quadrilobe / +ÆL-FRI-C ON-AXA, voided long cross on quatrefoil with pellet at each apex. Elmore Jones pl. VI, 6 (same dies); North 781; SCBC 1157. Deeply toned, nice VF. Extremely rare mint. ($5000)

There are only about twenty known pieces for all Saxon rulers from this mint. Cnut maintained the currency system of his predecessor, with recoinages every six years in order to insure that money in circulation was kept at good weight and quality.
