Rose with bud to left and right; to right, . Ashton 6. B�rend 20 (this coin) = Hecatomnus 49a (A32/P42). Very rare. An attractive piece: toned and with a remarkably fine and serene head of Apollo. Very fine.

The abbreviated name ... on the reverse has been taken as an artist�s signature by some, but given its prominent size it must, rather, be a magistrate�s name. At this period monetary magistrates in Rhodes primarily used symbols to identify the issues for which they were responsible; the large size of this signature may have been thought of as too ostentatious, with the result that no other such bold signatures were allowed.
