Harold Harefoot was the illegitimate son of Cnut. His claim to the throne was supported by several English nobles who apparently were disaffected by Harthacnut, who remained in his father's homeland. Harold's early death in 1040 left Harthacnut the sole possessor of the throne. Harthacnut proved to be a brutal despot; he desecrated Harold's body, devastated Worcester when the townspeople protested higher taxes, and murdered Edwulf, earl of Northumberland. Upon his death in 1042 Edward the Confessor became the next king.
