PLANTAGENET. Henry II. 1154-1189. AR Penny (20mm, 1.31 g, 6h). Class Ib1. York mint; Gerard, moneyer. Struck 118-circa 1182. Crowned facing bust, holding scepter in right hand / + GERARD · ON · ЄVЄR, voided short cross; quatrefoils in angles. SCBI 56 (Mass), 552-4 var. (shape of first E in reverse legend); North 963; SCBC 1344. VF, toned.

The three examples in the Mass collection of Class Ib1 for Gerard all feature Gothic Es in the reverse legend. The present coin bears a Roman E for the first instance, and Gothic Es for the mint name. Roman Es on the reverse are an “exceptional” variation for this class noted only at Oxford and Exeter.
