UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES. Circa early 5th-early 8th century. AR (18mm, 1.12 g, 12h). Uncertain mint. OIYIVI OIVSIII, diademed and draped bust left / CCC ΛIY OIII (horizontal retrograde S), (retrograde S)IV between two bars; YIY. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, toned, flan crack, flan crimped, small edge chip.

This coin, an imitative issue produced by one of the many Germanic groups during the period of the Völkerwandering, appears to have no clear prototype. The left facing obverse, deriving from Roman and Byzantine obverses on silver issues of the fourth to sixth centuries, can be explained by the reverse cutting of the die. The reverse type appears to have no known prototype, and may be a rather free interpretation of the Romano-Byzantine siliquas. Truly an enigmatic coin.
