IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Base EL Hekte (10mm, 2.15 g). Forepart of horse left / Quadripartite incuse square. Elektron I 1 corr. (obv. type); Triton XI, lot 252; CNG E-333, lot 97; otherwise unpublished in the standard references. VF, toned, granular surface.
The obverse style and reverse punch on this issue bears a striking resemblance to silver tetrobols that E. Schönert-Geiss and J.M.F. May attributed to Maroneia in Thrace. The handful that have been published are all of base electrum, and it is possible that the tetrobols are merely a later issue with all gold removed. The attribution to Maroneia is possible, but the arguments advanced by Schönert-Geiss and May are circumstantial and, due to the lack of evidence, not conclusive.
