ISLAMIC, Mongols. Ilkhanids. Arghun. AH 683-690 / AD 1284-1291. AR Dirham (23mm, 2.47 g, 3h). Sun & Hawk type. Tabriz mint. Dated AH 687 or 689 (AD 1288/9 or 1290/1). Diler Ar-172 (689 date unlisted); Nyamaa 143 var. (date); SICA 9, 494 var. (same); Album 2148. VF, toned.

While the hundreds and the tens of the AH date are written in the Diwani script, the final digit of the date is written in Kufic script. Depending on the skill of the die cutter, the numbers 7 and 9 can be confused because of the similarity between the formation of the two. Diler does not list this date in his study. It is therefore possible that the date on this coin is 687 – a miscut date – or is a heretofore unrecorded 689.
