KINGS of MACEDON. temp. Alexander III – Philip III. Circa 325-319 BC. AV Quarter Stater (11.5mm, 2.115 g, 6h). In the name of Alexander III. Amphipolis mint. Struck under Antipater. Helmeted head of Athena right / Bow and club; thunderbolt above. Price 165; SNG Alpha Bank 464–6; SNG Saroglos 179–81. EF, a few minor marks. Unusual placement of legend for issue.

From the collection of Dr. Lawrence A. Adams, purchased from Pars Coins, September 2000.

Technically, Price does not differentiate this issue by virtue of the distribution of the letters of Alexander’s name on the reverse. That said, there are apparently four varieties: (1) AΛEΞAN above the bow, ΔPOY below the club; (2) AΛEΞA between the bow and club, NΔPOY below the club; (3) AΛEΞA between the bow and club, NΔPOY below the club; and (4) AΛEΞAN below the club, ΔPOY above the bow. Price only illustrates examples of variety (1), but all are fairly common.
