The Elliot Cresson medal was endowed by the philanthropist in 1848, to be presented for important advances in the arts and sciences. Though not stated on the piece, this medal was awarded to Dudley in the category of engineering, for his dynamograph. Only 258 awards have been presented since the prize’s inception.
