Interesting Fourrée of a Seleukos I Tetradrachm

360, Lot: 169. Estimate $150.
Sold for $240. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

SELEUKID KINGS of SYRIA. Seleukos I Nikator. 312-281 BC. Fourrée Tetradrachm (28mm, 15.37 g, 10h). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin / ΣΕΛΕVΚΟ[V] to left, Zeus Aëtophoros seated left; without any monograms or mint symbols. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, toned, test cut which is part of the fourrée.

An interesting imitation where the fourrée incorporates a test cut as part of the deception. The interior of the test cut appears to be of good quality silver, but green deposits, probably from the core, have appeared inside the cut, and the weight of 15.37 also indicates a fourrée.
