KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (31mm, 17.15 g, 1h). Uncertain mint, perhaps Alexandreia Troas of Kios. Posthumous issue, circa mid-late 3rd century BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear behind; ME monogram to inner left, bow in exergue. Unpublished. Good VF, toned, a little die wear, slight die shift on obverse, scratch under tone in field on reverse. Very rare.

Although this issue is not published, there is a cast of another example made by Henri Seyrig in the photofile of the ANS. He categorized that example, his no. 162-15 under Alexandreia Troas, but this attribution must remain speculative without further evidence. Interesting, another cast, no. 147-4, is of a coin from the same obverse die, with the same ME monogram, but with a club in the exergue. Bows and clubs were used at many mints, as was the ME monogram, but most significantly by Kios among the posthumous issues of Lysimachos type. The style of the obverse is also fairly consistent with the 3rd century Lysimachi of Kios, but as with Seyrig’s attribution, firmer evidence is needed to substantiate attributing this piece to Kios.
