KINGS of MACEDON. Archelaos. 413-400/399 BC. AR Stater (22.5mm, 10.54 g, 1h). Aigai mint. Head of Apollo right, with short hair, wearing tainia / Horse advancing right, trailing rein, within shallow incuse square. Westermark, Staters, Group II, Series 1, dies O20/R– (unlisted obv. die); SNG ANS 70 = SNG Berry 76 var. (arrangement of ethnic). VF, toned, double struck and some die wear on obverse, a few minor marks on reverse. Unpublished with only AP above horse.


Westermark’s die study considered the distribution of the ethnic around the square of the reverse. Previously, no die was known with less than APX above the horse.
