Research Coins: Electronic Auction

362, Lot: 157. Estimate $300.
Sold for $525. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. EL Hekte – Sixth Stater (8mm, 2.40 g). Lydo-Milesian standard. Head of lion right / Two incuse squares. Unpublished in the standard references. Good Fine, compact flan, struck with worn obverse die.

The lion head motif was quite common among the early electrum coins with figural types. While much of the type is difficult to see, the ear is clearly visible, and of a very unusual form that is inconsistent with published examples from both Ionia and Lydia.
