LYCIA, Telmessos(?). Circa 410-370 BC. AR Stater (20mm, 8.18 g, 1h). Helmeted head of Athena right / Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress; club to right; all within incuse square. Cf. Reuter 127 = Hurter, Tissaphernes 34 (hemistater), otherwise unpublished in the standard references. VF, lightly toned, struck with worn reverse die. Very rare.

The Athena-Herakles type was common on dynastic issues of circa 410-370 BC. This particular issue, though, lacks an ethnic identifying a particular dynast. That said, the club of herakles was a common attribute on issues of Erbinna from the mint of Telmessos, which suggests that the issues lacking a dynast’s name, but with the club, belong to that mint. As noted by Hurter, the style of this anepigraphic issue is also consistent with Erbinna’s coinage from Telmessos.
