U.S. flag on pole billowing to right, Phrygian cap on top of pole; above, three-masted side-wheel steamship left; below and around, 1849 between six and seven stars / CALIFORNIA TOKEN, Federal eagle facing, shield on chest, wings spread, head left, grasping laurel branch and arrows with its claws. Cf. John J. Ford Collection (Stack's, 16 October 2007), lot 3254 for type. EF, toned, weakly struck in the center of both sides. Rare(?).
