1796. • TOKEN COLLECTORS HALFPENNY • PAYABLE ON DEMAND around, a collector seated left at a table, smoking a long-stemmed pipe; behind him, an old man standing left, holding a cane with his left hand, placing a fool’s cap on the collector with his right hand; tokens spread across the table; 1796 in exergue / ASSES RUNNING FOR HALFPENCE, two boys racing asses to right; the one on the right looking back, holding a whip; the one on the left is losing his hat. Edge: ANY SUM GIVEN FOR SCARCE ORIGINAL IMPRESSIONS in raised letters. D&H 299. AU, mostly brown with traces of red.
